1. Visit heroes square

One of Budapest’s main squares showcases Seven statues of the Hungarian leaders who founded the country’s seven tribes. Located at the end of Andrássy Avenue, one of the city’s key boulevards, the square is also near the Széchenyi Baths. If you’re staying downtown, take the M1 metro to Hősök tere, and you’ll spot the square right as you step out of the metro station.

Location: Budapest, Hősök tere, 1146

2. Széchenyi baths

The most popular thermal baths in Budapest and definitely worth a visit. These baths were built in 1913 and are a very praised attraction from tourists.

The thermal baths are relaxing, calm, affordable and are located in the biggest green park of Budapest (city park).

This is one of Budapest’s largest medicinal spas, supplied by two thermal springs. With a total of 21 pools, offering temperatures ranging from 20 to 38 degrees Celsius, it provides a diverse bathing experience. Booking in advance is recommended and costs around €37. Pack swimwear, a towel, flip flops and a swim cap (if you wish to go swimming).

Location: Budapest, Állatkerti krt. 9-11, 1146

Where to book: Széchenyi Spa Full Day with Optional Pálinka Tour

3. Walk across chain bridge (or ride electric scooter)

A significant landmark in the city, the Chain Bridge links Buda and Pest, the western and eastern parts of Budapest. Constructed by 1849, it stretches across the Danube River. You can either walk, drive or scooter across the bridge, taking in the beautiful views all around (including Buda Castle).

Location: Budapest, Széchenyi Lánchíd, 1051

4. Explore Buda and pest – two different cities connected by many bridges

Budapest, Hungary’s capital, was formed by the merger of two distinct cities in the 1870s: Buda, located on the western side, and Pest, on the eastern side. The Danube River flows between them, dividing the city into its two historic halves.

Buda is known to be the quieter side, more residential area with leisurely touristy attractions. It’s the home to the beautiful Fisherman’s bastion, Buda castle and Mathias church. You can even take a ride on the funicular to see the spectacular views from above.

Pest is known to be the more lively side, where all the action happens. You will find many tourists and hangout spots here (including the ruin bars). There’s also the Parliament building, Opera house, Heroes square, Széchenyi baths and the Budapest Zoo.

In my opinion to get the most out of your visit, you have to experience both sides! And if you’re up for it – take a night time cruise along the Danube river.

5. Cruise on Danube river

I would 100% recommend taking a nighttime cruise along the Danube river. There are plenty of websites to book from and many options. I booked on getyourguide.com for a 1-hour sightseeing cruise with a welcome drink. This was more than enough time to take in the beautiful views – including passing the beautifully lit parliament building.

The cruise also passes: Buda castle, Concert hall and Gellért hill.

Where to book: Get-your-guide Budapest boat cruise

Cost: approx. €10 per person

6. Fisherman’s bastion viewpoint

Fisherman’s Bastion, located on the Buda side of Budapest, is a must-see attraction famous for its stunning views. It has beautiful towers with the best panoramic views of Budapest and a cute restaurant where you can enjoy Hungarian chimney cakes while taking in the sights.

Location: Budapest, Szentháromság tér, 1014

7. Castle hill

Castle Hill is a large walled area, about 1.5km long, on a limestone plateau above the Danube’s West Bank. Here you’ll find shops, eateries, and pretty cobblestone streets. You can reach it by funicular, walking, or taking a bus.

8. Party in Budapest ruin bars

If you’re visiting Bupadest then you must add this to your itinerary! The nightlife in Budapest is great – and the place to be is the Ruin bars. Which is a collection of bars in an abandoned building, filled with lots of cool graffiti, plants and lights. The most popular ruin bar would be the Szimpla Kert, so make sure to check that out – but honestly you can just walk around the place and see which place has the best vibes (and seats if available). The good thing about this hot spot is that it’s open 24hours, 7 days a week!

Location: Budapest, Kazinczy u., 1075

9. Ride the funicular up to Buda castle

The funicular is located right at the end of chain bridge on the Buda side. You can take a ride all the way up to Buda castle. It’s quite a unique experience, as it’s fundamentally a railway that goes up the mountainside – very cool if you ask me. Whilst riding the funicular, you’ll be able to take in the beautiful views of Budapest – try and get a front row seat for great pics.

Cost: 1 way 2000HUF (€5.30), round trip 3000HUF (€7.90)

Location: Budapest, Clark Ádám tér, 1013

10. Visit Mathias church

Mathias Church, on Castle Hill, was once where Hungarian kings were crowned. Its colourful roof, decorated with a unique diamond pattern, adds to its beauty.

Location: Budapest, Szentháromság tér 2, 1014

11. Visit karavan street food market

A lively street food market in the centre of Budapest, right next to the ruin bars (if you’re feeling peckish before a few drinks). Serving burgers, curries and traditional Hungarian dishes, finish off with a Hungarian Chimney cake. Prices are very decent and it’s good vibes, good people, quick service – definitely worth a visit! I would recommend the ‘crunchy’ stall – the buffalo wings were hmmmm amazing!

Location: Budapest, Kazinczy u. 18, 1075

12. Take a ride on the trams or metro

This is simply a must, it’s so easy to travel around Budapest via public transport. It’s very cheap and quick as well. You’ll need to buy a ticket from the machines located outside the stations or at the tram stops. Validation of ticket is required before entering as well. The metro will take you across the city and is easily accessible. The tram offers beautiful views and also easy to use.

Location: anywhere in Budapest

13. Visit the most beautiful café in Budapest – New York café

Located on Budapest’s Grand boulevard, this café is definitely grand. It’s one of the most beautiful cafe’s in the world and continues to draw in tourists. Be prepared to line up for a bit.

The prices are quite high, but the experience is unforgettable. From gold leaf lattes to live music (the violinist was incredible!). If you want to treat yourself, then take a stroll to this café.

Location: Budapest, Erzsébet krt. 9-11, 1073

14. Visit ötvenhatosok tere budapest and nearby park

A distinct monument honouring the 1956 revolution, located in City Park’s Ötvenhatosok Tere in Budapest. Easily accessible via the M1 metro line to Hősök tere, it’s just a brief stroll away.

Location: Budapest, 1146 Hungary

15. Walk up the néprajzi múzeum

Also known as the museum of Ethnography, this is a very cool museum. The whole building is shaped like a skateboard – curving up on either side. There’s multiple pathways where you can walk right up to the top on either side and see the amazing views of Budapest. Just don’t look down if you’re afraid of heights haha, it’s quite high up.

Location: Budapest, Dózsa György út 35, 1146

Thank you for taking the time to read! Until next time.
