1. Budgeting
Start on your journey correctly by budgeting your expenses. Review your monthly expenses and think of ways to save. Cut down on unnecessary spending to maximize your travel funds. This could be small or large cuts, for example:
• No takeaways or one per week
• Walk instead of taking public transport
• Cut down on buying coffees
• Minimise spending when out (ask yourself – ‘do you really need that extra drink at 1:47am when the bar closes at 2am)
• Meal prep
2. Monzo Magic – Building Your Travel Pot
Explore the wonders of Monzo by creating a travel pot. The amazing feature rounds up your transactions to the nearest pound, channelling the spare change into your pot. This will definitely help your savings increase monthly – I saved over £300 in just 7 months using this feature alone!
3. Booking Cheap Flights
Uncover the secrets of budget-friendly travel with @skyscanner. Compare different routes and airlines to find the most economical options for your dream destination.
Another hack when finding cheap flights is using the Google flights tool – where your can see the cheapest round trip on the map!
4. Timing is Everything
Master your flight-booking game by choosing the right moment to book. Monday night or Tuesday morning flights often come with reduced prices. Additionally, flying on the cheapest days for your country can be a game-changer – in the UK, that’s typically a Friday.
5. Cheap Accommodation
Find the best affordable accommodations with @bookingcom. Discover a plethora of cheap hotels and hostels to suit your travel budget.
Last year I went on my first solo trip, travelling to Istanbul I wanted to cut down costs so opted to stay in a hostel instead of a hotel. It really saved me money and was an enjoyable experience. Would definitely recommend. After all you’re only there to sleep.
6. Plan for Ahead
Maximise your time at the destination by planning ahead. Create a rough itinerary outlining the sights and activities you want to experience. Utilize route planners and consider proximity to transport for a seamless travel experience.
I use the app TripIt to make itineraries before my travel, including flights, accommodation, sights I want to visit, activities and best restaurants in the area.
7. Local Transport
Opt for cost-effective public transport options over taxis or Ubers at your travel destination, this will save you money and also get to experience experience the destination like a local. With the use of navigation apps like Google Maps or Moovit it’s easy to plan and let the apps guide you efficiently.
8. Inclusive Breakfast
Enhance your travel experience by booking accommodations with breakfast included. Not only does this save you money on every meal, but it also ensures a delightful start to your day without the stress of having to look for a place to eat first thing.
9. Booking Activities
To make your travel experience even better, I suggest pre-booking your planned activities. Personally, I use GetYourGuide to reserve all of mine, as they offer a diverse range of activities, ensuring a memorable journey.
I hope you found this helpful in planning your next trip.
Thank you for taking the time to read! Until next time.
